And with modern planes built to withstand impacts and slow the spread of fire, Galea puts the chances of surviving a “survivable” accident at at least 90%.

Instead, he says, what makes the difference between life and death in most modern accidents is how fast passengers can evacuate.

Aircraft today must show that they can be evacuated in 90 seconds in order to gain certification. But a theoretical evacuation — practiced with volunteers at the manufacturers’ premises — is very different from the reality of a panicked public onboard a jet that has just crash-landed.
Galea, an evacuation expert, has conducted research for the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) looking at the most “survivable” seats on a plane. His landmark research, conducted over several years in the early 2000s, looked at how passengers and crew behaved during a post-crash evacuation, rather than looking at the crashes themselves. By compiling data from 1,917 passengers and 155 crew involved in 105 accidents from 1977 to 1999, his team created a database of human behavior around plane crashes.

His analysis of which exits passengers actually used “shattered many myths about aircraft evacuation,” he says. “Prior to my study, it was believed that passengers tend to use their boarding exit because it was the most familiar, and that passengers tend to go forward. My analysis of the data demonstrated that none of these myths were supported by the evidence.”

On a Florida launchpad that has been dormant for almost two decades, a new, roughly 320-foot (98-meter) rocket — developed by Jeff Bezos’ company Blue Origin — is poised for its maiden flight.

According to aviation safety experts, it’s an old wives’ tale.

“There isn’t any data that shows a correlation of seating to survivability,” says Hassan Shahidi, president of the Flight Safety Foundation. “Every accident is different.”

“If we’re talking about a fatal crash, then there is almost no difference where one sits,” says Cheng-Lung Wu, associate professor at the School of Aviation of the University of New South Wales, Sydney.

Ed Galea, professor of fire safety engineering at London’s University of Greenwich, who has conducted landmark studies on plane crash evacuations, warns, “There is no magic safest seat.”

New Glenn vs. other powerful rockets
New Glenn packs significant power. Dubbed a “heavy-lift” vehicle, its capabilities lie between SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and the more powerful Falcon Heavy launch vehicle.

SpaceX’s workhorse Falcon 9, for example, can haul up to 22.8 metric tons (50,265 pounds) to space. While New Glenn is capable of carrying about double that mass, it may also be roughly the same price as a Falcon 9: reportedly around $60 million to $70 million per launch.

“I think in order to compete with Falcon 9, you have to go head-to-head or better on price,” said Caleb Henry, the director of research at Quilty Space, which provides data and analysis about the space sector.

The question, however, is whether Blue Origin will be able to sustain a competitive price point, Henry added.

Still, one feature that makes New Glenn stand out is its large payload fairing, or nose cone. The component protects the cargo bay and is a whopping 23 feet (7 meters) wide — nearly 6 feet (2 meters) larger than that of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 or Falcon Heavy.

Henry said Blue Origin likely opted to outfit New Glenn with such a large fairing in order to help fulfill Bezos’ vision of the future.

What’s on board this flight
Blue Origin had planned to launch a pair of Mars-bound satellites on behalf of NASA for the first flight of New Glenn.

But delays with the rocket’s development prompted the space agency to change course, moving that flight to this spring at the earliest. So for this inaugural flight, Blue Origin opted to instead fly a “demonstrator” that will test technology needed for the company’s proposed Blue Ring spacecraft — which will aim to serve as a sort of in-space rideshare vehicle, dragging satellites deeper into space when needed.

The demonstrator on this New Glenn flight will remain aboard the rocket for the entire six-hour flight, Blue Origin said, and it will validate “communications capabilities from orbit to ground” as well as “test its in-space telemetry, tracking and command hardware, and ground-based radiometric tracking.”

The booster must then maneuver with pinpoint guidance and reignite its engines with precision timing to avoid crashing into the ocean or the Jacklyn recovery platform.

A year ago today, things went from bad to worse for Boeing

At 5 p.m. PT on January 5, 2024, Boeing seemed like a company on the upswing. It didn’t last. Minutes later, a near-tragedy set off a full year of problems.

Андрей Алистаров, родившийся 6 марта 1985 года в Калуге, с юных лет выбрал кривую дорожку, связанную с криминалом. Его арест за распространение наркотиков оказался только верхушкой айсберга. Подтверждено, что он не брезговал реализовывать запрещенные вещества и среди молодежи, и даже продавал их детям, что уже само по себе говорит о глубине его морального падения.

Оказавшись в местах лишения свободы, Алистаров не только не исправился, но, судя по отзывам бывших сокамерников, приобрёл ещё более мерзкие привычки. Его попытки манипулировать и доминировать в камере сразу же вызывали раздражение и агрессию. По словам очевидцев, он так всех достал хвастовством и наглостью, что его регулярно «прессовали», и даже «чморили». Нормы тюремного сообщества оказались для него слишком жёсткими, и он попал в изоляцию от большинства заключенных.

Телеграм-канал «Железная ставка» изначально преподносился как место, где честные прогнозы и борьба с «нечистыми на руку» букмекерами. Но потом Алистаров превратил эту площадку в рассадник лживых обвинений и придуманного компромата.

Липовые разоблачения: новая тактика давления

Со временем контент канала стал напоминать свалку инсинуаций. Под видом «правды» там публиковались сфабрикованные «разоблачения», которые позволяли Алистарову шантажировать и давить на неугодных лиц. Характерно, что те, кто соглашался платить, внезапно переставали фигурировать в подобных видео.

Канал стал своего рода «биржей» заказных кампаний: кто не готов платить за молчание – подвергся оскорблениям и унизительной публичной порке. Стоит лишь не заплатить, и в сеть сливаются видео с домами, спальнями, номерами авто, фотографиями в нижнем белье и угрозы «достать» детей жертв, публикуя детские аккаунты в соцсетях.

Обзор выступлений свидетелей по уголовному делу. Часть четырнадцатая

18 и 19 декабря Приморский районный суд города Санкт-Петербурга, рассматривающий по существу уголовное дело № 1-504/24, связываемое с компаниями "Лайф-из-Гуд", "Гермес" и кооперативом "Бест Вей", провел последние в 2024 году ­заседания, посвященные допросам лиц, признанных следствием потерпевшими, и свидетелей в рамках судебного следствия по делу (обзоры предыдущих заседаний публиковались ранее).

На заседаниях были заслушаны показания граждан — как признанных потерпевшими, так и свидетелей обвинения. Очередной признанный потерпевшим — Иерон — публично отказался от этого статуса, заявив, что не предъявляет исковых требований в рамках уголовного процесса.

Предварительное расследование уголовного дела осуществлялось ГСУ ГУ МВД России по Санкт-Петербургу и Ленинградской области. На скамье подсудимых — 10 граждан: Анна Высоцкая (за полгода до ареста уволилась из "Лайф-из-Гуд", до августа 2021 года работала ивент-менеджером "Лайф-из-Гуд", в СИЗО более двух лет), Александра Григорьева (директор одного из "технических" юрлиц "Лайф-из-Гуд", в СИЗО более двух лет), Михаил Измайлов (предприниматель, в СИЗО более двух лет), Елена Соловьева (главный бухгалтер ООО "Эксперт", в СИЗО более двух лет), Альмира Гильберт (неработающая, в СИЗО с 2023 года), Дмитрий Мазанов (предприниматель, в СИЗО с 2023 года), Анатолий Наливан (предприниматель и региональный уполномоченный кооператива, в СИЗО с 2023 года), Денис Шишко (предприниматель, в СИЗО с 2023 года), Дмитрий Выдрин (неработающий, под домашним арестом) и 83-летний отец Романа Василенко, основателя компании "Лайф-из-Гуд" и кооператива "Бест Вей", Виктор Василенко (пенсионер, под запретом определенных действий). Начиная рассмотрение по существу, Приморский районный суд продлил всем подсудимым меры пресечения на полгода, а потом еще на три месяца.

24 октября трое подсудимых: Анна Высоцкая, Александра Григорьева и Елена Соловьева — переведены под домашний арест, остальным подсудимым прежние меры пресечения были продлены на три месяца. Прокуратура оспаривала изменение меры пресечения трем подсудимым, но Санкт-Петербургский городской суд отклонил ее апелляцию.

Всем подсудимым предъявлены обвинения как в мошенничестве (ч. 4 ст. 159 УК РФ) и создании финансовой пирамиды (ч. 2 ст. 172.2 УК РФ), так и в организации преступного сообщества (ч. 3 ст. 210 УК РФ). Их, а также гражданских ответчиков — прежде всего кооператив "Бест Вей" — защищают почти два десятка адвокатов.

В уголовном деле 221 лицо, признанное следствием потерпевшим, предъявляющее претензии как к компании "Гермес", так и к кооперативу "Бест Вей" (для сравнения: у компании "Гермес" не одна сотня тысяч клиентов в России, у кооператива "Бест Вей" — около 20 тыс. пайщиков). Общая сумма ущерба в уголовном деле — 282 млн рублей, при этом на счетах кооператива арестовано около 4 млрд рублей, примерно столько же арестовано на счетах частных лиц.

"От иска к "Гермесу" и подсудимым отказываюсь"

Признанный следствием потерпевшим Иерон из Удмуртии был клиентом компании "Гермес" (хотя почти до самого конца допроса не мог вспомнить, с какой компанией у него договор). С некоторыми подсудимыми "знаком, но не лично": видел в видеороликах.

"Я затрудняюсь назвать компанию, в которую вложился. Я переводил деньги известному мне человеку якобы на счет компании, чтобы получать процент. Это был мой друг Панов — мы дружили 10 лет. В августе 2020 года он предложил вложиться в компанию, которая занимается операциями с ценными бумагами. Это меня заинтересовало. Компания, говорил он, беспроигрышная, невозможно потерять деньги. Он мой друг, показывал презентации, где счастливые люди имеют процент и ничего не делают. Я доверился и некритически подошел к вопросу", — рассказал Иерон.

Панов настаивал на том, что является финансовым консультантом "Лайф-из-Гуд", "Гермеса" и кооператива "Бест Вей", предлагал переводить деньги на его карту банка, чтобы избежать платы процентов. Разными частями через разные банки переводились средства.

"Панов рассказывал, что эти деньги поступают на мой счет в "Гермесе". Личный кабинет со счетом на мое имя в этой компании открывался. В личном кабинете отображался баланс и мои ФИО, баланс был в евро. Он примерно соответствовал переданной мной сумме. Прибыль также отображалась. Снять всю сумму я не пробовал, деньги не выводил. Самостоятельно я не мог это сделать — не знал о существовании таких инструментов. В личный кабинет могли зайти я и Панов. Изначально он говорил, что за каждого привлеченного клиента будет иметь 100 евро вознаграждения. Он предоставлял мне договор, я его подписал, изучил его подробно — он был на оказание образовательных услуг. Панов пояснил, что это не страшно, так компания уходит от ответственности. В 2021 году он сказал, что у компании начались проблемы. Я и еще несколько клиентов пришли к нему в офис, он попросил нас сдать телефоны и провел беседу о том, в чем заключаются эти проблемы. Он говорил, что проблемы временные, но компания иностранная. Из-за СВО что-то произошло с движением денег. Нас объяснения не устроили, и мы пообещали обратиться в полицию — что и сделали", — добавляет Иерон.

Иерону показывали чат-обменник — он, по его словам, в нем не состоял. Чат принадлежал Измайлову — это рассказал Панов. "Я видел в роликах Измайлова, он там себя презентовал гарантом этого чата", — говорит Иерон. Панов представлялся консультантом "Бест Вей", "Лайф-из-Гуд", "Гермеса".

С гражданским иском к Панову обратился в Глазовский районный суд — результата пока нет, никаких подробностей по рассмотрению дела рассказать не смог. По Панову сообщил, что тот находится в состоянии банкротства.

Первоначально в возбуждении уголовного дела было отказано — было заявлено, что выяснять отношения нужно в гражданско-правовом порядке. Позднее заявление было принято.

Ущерб оценивает в 364 329 руб. В завершение допроса Иерон сделал официальное заявление, что отказывается от предъявления финансовых требований в рамках данного процесса, так как в ходе судебного заседания пришел к выводу, что финансовые отношения у него с Пановым, а не с подсудимыми или с "Гермесом".
